Case Studies of Highway Economic Impact
The Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP2) has funded a $1.7 million project to collect case studies of highway project impacts around North America and Europe. The project is led by EDR Group, with a supporting team of consulting firms and universities. The results will be made publically available via a website. In the meantime, we welcome suggestions for case studies from any transportation agency or consultant. Read more...

Beyond Clusters... Alternative Growth Paths for Economic Development
As economic clusters have attracted criticism for being oversold as a basis for economic development strategy, the Appalachian Regional Commission has published "Sources of Economic Growth", which presents an alternative approach for regional growth. This new series of reports, led by EDR Group, discusses how communities and regions can choose to pursue different "growth paths" to successfully achieve economic development.

Role of Short Railroads in Regional Development
As short line railroads are facing increasing economic pressure, their roles in regional development are also being recognized. For a short line railroad in Nova Scotia, EDR Group (with Opus International) evaluated the railroad's potential role in Canada's new Atlantic Gateway economic strategy, including opportunities for it to support a proposed inland terminal for the Port of Halifax, and alternative business models for continuation of service.

| BioFuel Energy Development Opportunities
Many states are attempting to develop energy policies that promote alternative fuels, for both energy independence and economic development. For the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative, EDR Group evaluated US and European programs encouraging both production and consumption of alternative forms of biofuels (beyond corn ethanol) for the transportation, home heating and utility markets.

Use of TREDIS for Transportation Projects
TREDIS, the Transportation and Economic Development Impact System is being used in 32 US states and Canadian provinces to assess the economic impacts of proposed highway, rail and/or port projects. New modules are also being developed to expand the system's uses for both freight and public transportation applications. You can read about it all at the TREDIS website.
