Economic Impact of Aviation in Arizona

SH&E, with Economic Development Research Group and Lee McPheters, ASU College of Business, for Arizona DOT, 2004

Arizona, the Grand Canyon State, has enjoyed a unique position as an attraction of national tourism that depends directly on air travel. It is also a major location for the aerospace manufacturing, which itelf employs over 28,000 people in the state. And led by Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport, the state serves a large number of regional as well as national and international flights.

These industries and facilities, as well as the state's extensive network of general aviation airports, together make aviation an important factor in the state's overall economy. To document these growing trends, the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has maintained up-to-date reports on the economic contribution of the arespace industry and aviation in the state. For the latest update, ADOT turned to Simat Helliesen & Eichner, Inc. (SH&E) with EDR Group.

The project had three parts: The first part of this study was an updated analysis of the economic impact of all aviation activities in the state, including airports, aviation services and aviation manufacturing. A second part of the study examined the role of the State of Arizona’s Aviation Fund and its contribution to the overall aviation impact. A third part of the study measured of the economic impact of selected airports in the state, including the role of those airports and aviation industries in supporting jobs and business activity, using the IMPLAN model.

The updated economic impact analysis and modeling of economic impacts was conducted by Economic Development Research Group, Inc. View Brochure from ADOT web site (675 K) Printable Color Brochure from ADOT web site (1.9 MB)
