Integrating Tourism and Recreation Travel with Transportation Planning (Synthesis 329)

Economic Development Research Group conducted a "synthesis of practice" on the integration of tourism and recreation development with transportation planning.

The study examined the nature of tourism and recreational transportation access requirements, and how it is integrated into the transportation planning process by state and metropolitan planning organizations. The study also examined how various tourism and recreation planning agencies work together with transportation agencies to facilitate tourism development.

This assessment included:

1.  A detailed analysis of literature and recent research on the subject of transportation and tourism travel planning,

2.  A national survey of state, regional and federal agencies to identify the current state of practice regarding the inclusion of tourism travel in transportation planning,

3.  Case studies of multi-agency collaboration, analytical resources, and project solutions.
